Solid state physics typically deals with macroscopic properties of matter, which result from atomic-scale properties of crystals. Prominent material science related examples of current research topics are superconductivity, semiconductor physics and spin-based electronics. Various related modern experimental methods will be presented after short introductions of the associated research areas. In this lecture, we will first discuss sample preparation methods such as bulk single crystal and epitaxial thin film growth. Then, structural characterization methods such as X-ray and electron diffraction as well as scanning probe microscopy will be presented. These provide direct insight into the microscopic atomic arrangement of crystalline solids, from which specific electronic properties originate. We will then focus on methods such as angular resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, which probe the electronic dispersion relations directly. These electronic properties are the origin of macroscopic phenomena such as magnetic ordering, which allows to use photoemission processes also as the basic mechanism of microscopy of magnetic states (photoelectron emission microscopy). Finally, measurement methods of macroscopic properties such as magnetometry and electric transport are discussed, which are strongly related to actual device functionalities.
